This is lovely. We have lost far less knowledge that participation. The sky is still awesome, but it doesn't answer us in the same way. Perhaps what we miss is knowing that we didn't need to conquer the alternative explanations. Most days though the fact that we all still go on is wonder enough.
The Dutch in that period also depicted the heavens with globes, which would be paired with globes of the Earth, to sit side-by-side in the abodes of those who could afford them. So too, viewing such a globe one is positioned beyond the very heavens; although it may also be taken as a simple inversion, a swap of convex for concave.
I’m fortunate to live in a dark sky spot - I look at the heavens every night/morning and weather permitting here in the Highlands I see the stars and planets. My interest is astrology rather than astronomy and for me it is deeply associated with my Spiritual path. I am fortunate indeed. Beautiful book - going on my wish list!
